The next morning, Eloise was all a chatter about the latest gossip she heard from the other maids. I pretended to listen as she fiddled with braiding my hair. My mind was thinking back to the kindness that Bay had shown me. Montgomery was kind, too. I still did not think he would try anything like Bay had been concerned about. Montgomery reminded me of a caring brother. He looked out for me, even if it was against his blood-related sister. I wondered if I would be running into Bay today. And what about his promise? I shivered.

“Are you cold, Mina?” Eloise broke from her prattling to ask me.

“No, no. I am fine,” I responded. She resumed braiding my hair while I resumed imagining all of the delightful things Bay had promised to do to me.
